The owners of this 1903 farmhouse didn't want to lose the character of the original building. And they wanted a property that could serve the family for another 115 years or so. In the case of this house, the 115 year old basement foundation wasn't beefy enough to go the distance. The basement was carefully excavated to accept new a new concrete foundation. The original concrete slab was removed. The new slab floor was lowered to gain more headroom for a basement ADU. The spaces of the main floor were relocated to create better flow and gain a larger kitchen. Then, an entirely new second floor was added to the house. As a bonus, and thanks to a lot of sweat equity from the clients, we were able to incorporate salvaged wood from the original structure to design interior details that otherwise would have been prohibitive.
